How I Got Here


I have been a commercial artist for over 30 years and teaching for over 20 of those years. I have taught advertising/graphic design 16 years at the Columbus College of Art & Design and  Columbus State Community College. Where I taught design on the computer using the Adobe Creative Suite which includes; Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and After Effects. 

I have been working with K-12 age children for over 20 years teaching in the classroom, art camp, church, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. I enjoy helping students learn history, language, math, science and literature through art to help them gain a greater understanding of the world around them.

My interests in art education include finding ways to help students connect to the world through art as well as help them to gain an appreciation for the arts. 

I have taught at the elementary level at Licking Valley Elementary and currently teach at Licking Valley Middle School as the Visual Art teacher for grades 6–8. I am also the sponsor of Licking Valley Middle School's National Junior Art Honor Society. 

Currently I am serving as the PR/Advocacy Representative for Central Ohio Art Education Association and am part of the leadership team of the Ohio Art Education Association.
I am pursuing the Masters of Art in Art Education to help me gain a new understanding of current trends in teaching art as well as helping me find new ways to connect with my students and my community through the use of art. 

Some possible research interests might be in Teaching For Design and Studio Habits of Mind. 

My personal artwork has been featured on the front page of the Arts section of the Columbus Dispatch and has been in juried shows in Columbus, Ohio.
I have worked in advertising as an Art Director in some various companies in Columbus such as Byers Chevrolet, Damon's International and Business First. I continue to freelance with my husband who is also a designer and professor at CCAD, as well as run my own business, Kimberly's Creative Canvas. You can find my work on the web at

Teacher Identity Post

  As I reflect on my identity as a teacher I see that there is so much to me. I am a very complex person with a myriad of experiences that have helped to form who I am, and what I believe.
